Sanjay Dutt, Jailbird
Today, Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, 53, surrended before a Mumbai court in reation to a weapons charge 20 years ago.
Here are 10 things you need to know:
1- In 1993, Dutt was found guilty of illegally possessing an AK-56, in connection with the Mumbai blasts that killed 257 people
2- He has already served 1.5 years out of his 5 year sentence, as an undertrial, for this case specifically
3- Dutt has been to jail on other occassions, serving 551 days in jail overall
4- He will be placed at Yeravada Jail, in Pune, which has already gotten threats, and so will be placed in its "Anda" ("Egg") cell which is meant to be one of the most secure
5- He will be working as a cook, earning Rs. 25 per day. If he excels, he may earn up to Rs. 50!
6- In a previous jailterm Dutt worked as a carpenter, crafting his first cane chair
7- He can meet 5 family members in total in a month, for just 20 minutes
8- Dutt will be allowed to bring: a mattress, pillow, religious books like the Bhagvad Gita, toiletries, mosquito repellent, and a fan.
9- He will not be allowed to bring cigarettes, electronic and otherwise (The judge GA Sanap advised him to stop smoking)
10- The term was originally meant to be six years
